1971 BMW 2002 Pick-Up

This 1971 BMW 1600 has been wonderfully reimagined as a Pick-Up Conversion. Originally part of the Neue Klasse of sedans and coupes that established BMW’s sporting identity between 1962-1972, the 1600 was introduced as a sedan in 1964. It was later discontinued and reintroduced in 1966 as a two-door model, the 1600-2/1602. This was the first of the 02 series fostered the 1972 BMW 2000 Touring, also featured in the Lubeck Garage. Born as a California-delivered 1602 and initially finished in white with a 1.6L M10 inline-four, this 1971 BMW 1600 has been transformed into a one-off pick-up truck with mechanical upgrades that elevate it far beyond novelty.

Integral to this car’s evolution is the transplanted E36 2.5L M20 straight-six paired with a 4-speed manual gearbox, a substantial performance leap that delivers the power, torque, and responsiveness that enthusiasts often wished these early cars had. Turbo flares subtly widen the car’s stance, while the sport bike exhaust gives it a sharper presence.

The pick-up conversion itself is the centerpiece of the 1600. Rather than overwhelming the retro design, it enhances it, resulting in a vehicle that feels simultaneously classic and freshly reinterpreted. Beyond its pick-up identity, the car’s body was refinished in a deep burgundy, complemented by wood-trimmed bed edges and a rubber-lined cargo area that merges utility with craftsmanship.

Inside, the cabin features black M-sport leather seats with signature M stripes, adding a contemporary sporting touch while maintaining the car’s analog charm. A modern stereo replaces the original nonfunctioning radio, a progressive yet practical improvement that does not compromise the car’s vintage feel.
