2021 Ford Shelby GT500: the full story
When Ford brought the iconic Shelby moniker back in 2005, it was not merely for the sake of nostalgia. The name behind the original 1965 Mustang name means something. Introduced in 1968, the Mustang Shelby GT500KR returned for 2008–2009, and again for 2020–2022, with each revival marking a deliberate and rare reemergence of the “King of the Road” (KR) identity. Shelby revealed the latest GT500KR on December 15, 2021, in celebration of its 60th Anniversary. To coincide with this milestone, only 60 models per year were produced between 2020 and 2022, culminating in a total of just 180 cars worldwide.
This 2021 limited-production model continues this lineage with a level of craftsmanship and performance that would have been unimaginable in the 1960s, yet it remains unmistakably rooted in Shelby’s history. Unlike a standard production model, this car is a post-title package, specifically tuned and modified by Shelby, transforming a factory GT500 into a personalized KR through a range of bespoke, customizable options.
Finished in Oxford White with bright, forged aluminum wheels and Velocity Blue stripes over the top, its wide body configuration recalls classic motorsport aesthetics with modern aggression. The car’s lightweight dry carbon fiber hood, reminiscent of the 2008–09 KR, is engineered for performance. Strategically placed side vents were developed alongside Ford to extract heat from the supercharged engine bay, reduce heat soak, and maintain optimal power, all while incorporating water-managed removable rain trays.
This car’s 5.2-liter supercharged V8 delivers 760 base horsepower. Paired with a 7-speed automated manual transmission, rear-wheel drive, and a robust liquid-cooled system, the GT500KR’s drive is smooth, brutal, and unmistakably Shelby. The performance is elevated beyond its factory output with a Whipple 3.8L supercharger system, pushing the car to 900+ horsepower. With a 16-gallon fuel capacity, the GT500KR maintains its real-world usability, but the character remains unapologetically performance-driven.
The 2021 GT500KR may be a beast of a car, but its interior ensures that those fortunate enough to own one experience that performance in style. Heated and cooled power front seats, full leather upholstery, and steering-wheel controls for transmission, audio, and cruise make the cabin both comfortable and intuitive. Blue-accented RECARO seats with leather recovers, a sport Alcantara steering wheel, and Shelby-specific detailing mirror the exterior. Modern safeguards, including 4-wheel ABS and stability and traction control, as well as an anti-theft alarm, ensure the driver can harness all that Shelby power. Thoughtful touches like garage integration, power cargo access, and premium aluminum and leather trim complete a cabin that balances function and luxury.
The 2021 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500KR honors its past while innovating upon it, upgrading mechanical areas where earlier generations showed their age, and preserving the essence of what made the original “King of the Road” so iconic. It may have a top speed more than double any legal limit in the U.S., but this car’s power is used for nothing but joy.
