The Commando is the bridge between the military-derived Jeeps and the recreational four-wheel drives that followed: compact, open-air and genuinely capable, with a V8 under a bonnet barely longer than the engine itself. Introduced by Kaiser Jeep in 1966 as the Jeepster Commando and redesigned by American Motors for 1972, it brought Jeep hardware to people who wanted a trail, a beach and a summer afternoon rather than a job site.
